10 year old Boy Scout receives National Certificate of Merit
Pierce County Herald
A 10 year old Minnesota boy has won a national Boy Scout award, for saving a friend from a northwest Wisconsin river after a canoeing accident in 2010.
Antonio Vandal of North Saint Paul was given the National Certificate of Merit during the weekend. Antonio was on his first canoe trip with his father Rocky Vandal, when a friend’s boat capsized on the Namekagon River. Antonio used his Scout training to pull his friend from the water without capsizing his own canoe in the process.
US Senator Amy Klobuchar presented the award, which is given to scouts and their adult leaders for significant acts of service. Fewer than 60 such awards were given nationally last year.
